Getting Fit at Home: Home Gyms Top Custom Home Trends

Working out at home has become even more popular over the years, especially after Covid-19. Now more than ever, countless luxury custom homes are including gyms into their home’s design. Designing a home workout room is all about optimizing space, functionality, and motivation. Here’s a breakdown of how to design a home workout room to fit your needs.

Define Your Fitness Goals
Are you interested in cycling, strength training, doing yoga or pilates at home? If so here are a few things to consider.
Strength training: Need room for weights, racks, benches.
Cardio: Need space for machines like a treadmill, bike, or rower.
Yoga or Pilates: Need open floor space, mirrors, mats. If you are using a pilates reformer or tower, make sure you have plenty of space included in the design.

Choose the Right Space
Would you like to look outside while you workout? If so, you would need to select a room with windows and natural light. If you prefer a more solitary space, consider a basement interior spare bedroom.  When building a workout room make sure their is proper ventilation, ceiling height (especially for jumping or overhead lifts), and access to electrical outlets.

Motivational Mood
When decorating your workout space select a color scheme that is motivational and inspiring.  Many workout rooms include mirrors to help the athlete utilize the proper form. Motivational quotes and a television is also an important item to include, especially if you participate in guided workouts.

Entertainment
In addition to a television, make sure you have a good sound system installed in your room.

Climate Control
Make sure to include plenty of ventilation and fans in your workout space. Dehumidifiers can also be helpful depending on the space.

Flooring
Depending on your style there are a few possible flooring options to consider in your home gym.
Rubber gym tiles are durable, shock-absorbing
Foam mats: Budget-friendly for light activity
Hardwood: Best for pilates, yoga or dance.
