Your new home can come with a lot of perks, like energy-efficient appliances and other “smart” features, but just because it's new doesn’t mean you can neglect those routine maintenance duties. As the weather begins to change, it’s time to prep your home for falling leaves and cooler temperatures. Add these tasks to your to-do list and you’ll maintain that new home feeling even longer!
Change furnace filter
Furnace filters usually last around 90 days, but you might need to change them more often at first in a new build because of extra construction particles.
Review safety plans
Not only should you plan to do an annual review of your home’s safety features, but it’s also a good time to review your fire evacuation plan with your family. You’ll also want to change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
Assess your exterior
Make sure to get the name of your exterior paint and brand so you can do your own touch-ups! You’ll also want to look for leaks or cracks that you can fill with caulk.
Clean the gutters
Clogged gutters can lead to a damaged exterior and water in your basement. Try to clean them out at least twice a year to prevent damage.
Winterize your irrigation system
We recommend using a professional lawn care service to winterize sprinklers. This will ensure water does not freeze underground during the winter and cause damage to any pipes. Also, make sure to close any shut-off valves to outside faucets and drain the lines.
Inspect landscaping
It takes time for the surrounding soil to resettle around your home. Ensure all your landscaping is sloped away from your home. This will keep the water and debris away and help prevent any damage.
Read owner’s manuals
Make sure you know how to take care of all your new appliances and keep them in tip-top shape. You’ll also want to learn how to properly care for things like your new flooring, countertops, windows, and more.
