Spring Cleaning and Home Maintenance Tips

March 16, 2022

Hello, spring! Many of us homeowners have been trapped inside our homes to stay out of the cold, and now with spring’s return, it’s our chance to step outside and relish in soothing warm temperatures.

It’s also the perfect time to do some home maintenance and make sure our home is ready for the warmer months ahead. Home maintenance is a necessary part of home ownership. Doing a little TLC now can help you spot and prevent costly repairs later on.

Sure, home upkeep and maintenance can easily feel overwhelming — especially if you try to take it on all at once. But here’s the thing: you don’t need to do every maintenance task in one weekend. In fact, you shouldn’t.

Paul Gray Homes has created an easy-to-follow home maintenance checklist for what you need to do to keep your home humming this spring. If you love your home, you will want to check these tasks off your spring to do list!

Spring Home Maintenance Checklist

1 ) Inspect Your Roof - April showers bring May flowers. But if your roof suffered damage during the winter, April showers may bring water leaks and pooling. Inspecting your roof is the easiest way to spot potential problems. Most damage, like missing or damaged shingles, can be spotted with a visual inspection. If you notice anything that prompts a closer inspection or a second option, call a licensed roofer who can diagnose the state of your roof.

2 ) Clean and Inspect Your Gutters - It’s a chore — and not typically a favorite — but it’s an important one, nonetheless, to preventing water damage in your home. Clogged gutters expose you to potential water damage. Beyond simply cleaning debris from the gutters, you’ll want to check for loose or leaky gutters, as they could cause drainage to pool in the basement or crawl space. Also look to see that the downspouts are draining away from your home’s foundation.

3 ) Clean Your HVAC - If you aren’t already replacing your air filter every three months, start there. But don’t stop there. Your HVAC system works hard all year, and simple maintenance can do a lot to maintain its peak performance. It’s a good idea to hire a qualified contractor to clean and service your outside unit at least once a year. To get the longest life out of your system — and prevent major repairs — look at having your equipment serviced before the start of the hot, hot summer.

4 ) Replace Batteries In Smoke Detectors - You never know when you’ll need them. It can be easy to forget smoke detectors. But you never want to take chances with something that’s designed to protect your family from harm. If you already have the ladder out, take 15 minutes and double-check those devices.

5 ) Run Your Sprinkler System - Home maintenance extends to beyond your home itself. Maintaining the landscape of your home starts with an inspection of your sprinkler and irrigation systems. A faulty or defective sprinkler system not only hurts your landscape, but also your wallet. Inspect the system through all zones and make sure no heads are broken or damage. You should also look to see that no heads are stuck or spraying at the house, sidewalks or porches.

6 ) Spruce Up the Outdoors - To experience the warmer weather in all its glory, savor it in the comfort of your outdoor space! Step outside during your afternoon of spring cleaning to tidy up the space and get your yard and landscape spring-ready. Before you run the mower, sharpen the blade and also clear up any debris that may be left over from winter storms. Trim any trees and shrubs to give them a fresh start of healthy growth. It’s also the right time to overseed your lawn and put down fertilizer. Finally, take a look at your deck or patio and give it a good cleaning. If it’s clean, you’ll enjoy it even more!

7 ) Finish What You Started - It happens. Sometimes the weather swoops in before we have the chance to complete our big home repair project. If that’s you, spring time is the perfect opportunity to get back outside and take care of projects put on hold over the winter. Use this time to knock out the necessary maintenance and get your home to its best quality.
